The Western Cape Military History Society (WCMHS) is a proud member of the Armed Forces Heritage Association (AFHA). As a founding organisation of AFHA, the WCMHS plays an active role in national efforts to conserve, digitise, and protect South Africa’s rich military heritage for future generations.
The WCMHS is a vibrant, non-profit, subscription-based community dedicated to studying, honouring, and preserving military heritage. Based at the historic SA Legion Rosedale Complex in Rosebank, the Society brings together enthusiasts, researchers, veterans, and collectors who share a passion for military history and the stories that shaped not only our nation, but the world.
Members meet monthly for high-quality talks presented by guest speakers, authors, historians, and subject‑matter experts. The Society also hosts regular outings to museums, heritage sites, battlefields, and places of military significance across the Western Cape.
WCMHS offers a unique honesty library of military history books and DVDs for members to borrow, as well as a curated sales table operated by one of our members (Ratel Books), featuring rare and out‑of‑print titles.
Our meetings start promptly at 19:30 every 3rd Thursday of the month, from February to November. A donation of R10 per person is requested to cover the cost of venue hire and facilities, payable at the entrance. All members are welcome to bring guests to the meetings.
Membership fees for 2026 are currently R80 per year. New members may join at the meetings. Ask the club secretary or email info@wcmhs.co.za to request a membership application form.
Tea, coffee, and biscuits are usually served after the meeting.

SA Legion Rosedale Complex, Lower Nursery Road, Rosebank. – Residents Recreation Room
Coordinates 33.95608° S, 18.47383° E
Take the Alma Road extension off Liesbeek Parkway, towards the mountain. At the T-junction (railway embankment – Rosebank Station), turn left onto Lower Nursery Road (some maps show it as Guildford Road merging into Lower Nursery Road).
The SA Legion Rosedale Complex is about 300 m down the road on the LH side, and is a 7-storey high-rise complex set back from the road (next to a block of high-rise flats) with a high wire-link fence and boom control at the entrance gate.
Secured public parking on the premises is to the left, once inside the complex, behind the covered resident parking bays (the public parking bays abut the road which you have just passed on your way towards the gate).
The main entrance and front of the building is in line with the road entrance.
The meetings are held in the residents’ recreation room, main block, through the entrance foyer and passage on the left just past the lift, first door on the RH side of the said passage.
