Fort Wynyard Outing 18th July 2026
Members of the WCMHS had the rare privilege of visiting the Fort Wynyard Battery in Cape Town, headquarters of the Autshumato Anti-Aircraft Regiment, renowned for its historic ‘disappearing gun’. There are only five of these unique guns left in the world.
Originally built to defend Table Bay in the 1800s, the fort showcases many aspects of our rich military heritage.
The tour, presented by the National Chairman of The Gunners Association, Kevin Ashton, gave a guided tour of the facility, the underground bunkers, the ‘arc of fire ’, as well as the ‘disappearing gun’ and their plans to revive the Fort as a functioning museum.
